Amana Colonies
The seven colonies were founded shortly before the United States Civil War by German-speaking European settlers who belonged to a religious group called the Community of True Inspiration. The colonies promoted a communal philosophy of living. Today these colonies are popular tourist attractions because of their handmade furniture, wool garments, wine, cheese, candies and homemade cooking. Many of the buildings retain the tradition of the original architecture.
