Moldova Society Project
"Election Impact for Good Governance"
Diane
Seligsohn and I were invited by IMPACT Media Agency in Moldova to provide training for
broadcast journalists and managers in that Eastern European Republic. The project was sponsored by the United States Embassy in Moldova, the Eurasia Foundation, National Endowment for Democracy and the Organization for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Moldova. This project is part of the strategy of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections.
The
training focused on political debates and election reporting and was scheduled in anticipation of
national elections to be held early next year.
A
health resort in Bucuria just outside the capital of Chisinau was the site of
the training. Our hosts were
Viorel Margineanu, executive director of IMPACT Media Agency, and Iraida Starasciuc,
interpreter and project manaager at IMPACT aide.
There
were separate election workshops for television and radio journalists as well
as for station managers. Diane and
I were helped in training by
well-known journalists from Moldova and Romania.
Diane
and I were impressed with the level of commitment displayed by the participants
as well as their interest and enthusiasm during the workshops.
Viorel
and Iraida were excellent hosts and provide valuable support in both classroom
settings as well as opportunities to experience Moldovan hospitality and
culture.
