Radio Today Journalism, Marketing, and Programming Workshop

Dhaka, Bangladesh

September 07—19, 2008

Radio Today FM (89.6) is the first private radio station in Bangladesh.  It went on the air in October 2006, is known as an ÒInfotainmentÓ station, and is the top-rated station in the country.

The two-week journalism, marketing and programming workshop was jointly sponsored by the Voice of America (VOA), the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) and held in the Radio Today offices in Dhaka.

The first week focused on journalism skills and audio production. There were 12 participants from the news department who worked enthusiastically and diligently on all projects. They produced two very professional final projects. This is a highly credible professional staff. Joint News Editor Makskudul Haider Chowdhury was my host for week one.

Week two began with a one-day program for the sales and marketing staff. They, too, were extremely enthusiastic in sharing their experiences and expertise. The number and variety of commercials on Radio Today is evidence of the commercial success of the station and its marketing department.

The workshop ended with a two-session with the programming staff. These were 19 of the Radio Jockeys (RJ), producers, and outside reporters. The on-air talent have quickly gained popularity from their creative approach to their music programs and reports.

My hosts were Managing Director Rafiqul Haque, News Editor A.K.M. Manjural Haque, Joint News Editors Maksudul Haider Chowdhury and M. Kamal Nasser. Administrative Executive S.M. Musfequr Saleheen was my host during Week Two. I was supported completely and generously during my two-week stay in Dhaka. A special thank you, too, to Journalist/RJ Afrin Ahmed and Staff Reporter Kaikobad Akbar for taking me sightseeing including a delightful boat ride on my final day in Dhaka. This was an extremely rewarding project and Radio Today is to commended to its dedication to professional growth.
